More than half of North Carolina residents now support legal recognition of same-sex couples, and more than one-quarter believe they should have full marriage rights, according to a poll released Monday.

The Elon University survey found that 29 percent of respondents in the state support civil unions or partnerships for same-sex couples but not full marriage rights. About 28 percent of people support full marriage rights.

Meanwhile, only 35 percent of respondents opposed all legal recognition for same-sex partners, down from 44 percent when the question was asked two years ago.

More than 350 tickets were sold before the doors opened Friday night for Winston-Salem’s first Gay Bingo game.

Hundreds also showed up to buy tickets at the door, and members of the crowd pushed past the 500 chairs at the bingo tables, seating themselves on bleachers against the walls at the Gateway YWCA.

“Clearly, Winston-Salem is behind this cause, in droves,” said Lauren Alspaugh of Winston-Salem. “I could not be happier. I’m not even mad that I can’t find a seat.”

Bebe Tea (pronounced B.B.T.) can’t wait to become a sashaying, lipsticked diva during Winston-Salem’s first Gay Bingo game Friday night.

The Winston-Salem man will don women’s clothes and become a “Bingo verifying diva,” better known on the Gay Bingo circuit as a BVD. He and nine other BVDs will dress up as women and provide a drag-queen show in between games of Bingo.

A protest yesterday against the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s policy on the inclusion of gays in family memberships turned confrontational after two men working at a nearby construction site displayed a large sign reading “All queers need is Jesus” and one of the men used a racial epithet against a bystander.
