Who We Are
EQUALITY WINSTON-SALEM was formed in 2010 to promote the well-being of LGBT individuals and strengthen the LGBT community in Winston-Salem and surrounding areas. We do this by increasing resources through fundraising, targeting those resources strategically to areas of greatest need, partnering with open and affirming faith communities and our straight allies, and serving as a catalyst for ideas and solutions.
What We Do
In an effort to increase the visibility of the LGBT community, Equality Winston-Salem supports events that celebrate and honor the diversity of our LGBT community. EWS is responsible for hosting the first Gay Bingo events in Winston-Salem, the first PRIDE festival/parade in 15 years (WINSTON-SALEM PRIDE 2011 and 2012), the first Equality Business Fair promoting LGBT-friendly work environments, and awarding the first LGBTQ scholarships to deserving high school seniors.
OUR ONGOING OBJECTIVES include
- Educating and organizing our faith communities to become participating allies for our cause
- Educating and supporting the Gay/Straight youth alliances in high schools and colleges with outreach programs and scholarships
- Educating and organizing support from the corporate/business community, including employment nondiscrimination efforts.
